The myth of the money tree.

This has to be one of the hardest posts I've ever had to write. And that's coming from someone who will pretty much share anything and actually has to work pretty hard sometimes to not over-share. Haha. So, yeah, this one was a doozie.

Most of you know, but some of you may not, that I am busy putting together a business plan for my first retail store. It is a huge undertaking and a tiny bit tedious but overall such a joy. I have loved the process of taking years of bottled up dreams and fine-tuning them into something real and practical. And it has been so cool to have the support of my family and friends, offering their advice, wisdom and encouragement whenever I need it and at all the right times. I am blessed beyond measure. This Fall (Sept-Oct) I will be launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise the start-up money that I need to get this dream off the ground.

Now here's where things get dicey... it makes me feel so uncomfortable asking for money, even in the most roundabout ways. However, the fact remains that money indeed does not grow on trees and I can not do this alone. I wrote a post about this awhile back and one dear reader pointed out something that really stuck with me.

All I can do is try. All I can do is ask. All I can do is trust that the impossible is possible. There are people out there that want to help. People who have big dreams, maybe even my very same dream, that for whatever reason won't be able to fulfill it in their lifetime. And it is that person that may very well love to help me fulfill mine. And, as the reader pointed out, it isn't very fair to not even give that person the opportunity to do that just because I'm scared/embarrassed/nervous about the outcome.

This is the part where I take a very deep breath. After much thought, research, prayer and counsel I have set a goal of $50,000.
That is a big pile of pennies. I am doing everything I can on my end toward that goal and am setting aside everything there is to spare. Even though there are a number of months ahead of me before I get to start taking real steps towards the dream (i.e. finding a space, signing a lease, purchasing inventory etc.) there are some expenses that come way before that. Business licenses, continuing education, video production for my Kickstarter campaign and much more. So I have put a "Click here to DONATE" button over on the sidebar for those of you who have a few pennies to throw in the pile. The button will direct you to a Paypal Donations page where you can contribute by using any major credit card or your Paypal account. Your support means so much to me. Whether you support me with pennies, words, positive vibes or by spreading the word! I hope you will all understand my heart on the matter and feel free to email me with any thoughts, concerns or questions. Thank you a million times over!

  1. Best of luck to you on accomplishing your dreams!

Have you considered doing a commission based inventory? like when the item sells you get 40% and the creator gets 60% type of deal? I don't own a shop so i'm not sure exactly how that works, but I believe you wouldn't have to purchase the merchandise upfront, so it could save you start-up costs in that respect.

  3. this is amazing! I think it's okay to ask for help when you need it as long as you are not spamming other people's blogs (which you aren't) my friend recently posted something on facebook about needing to go to see his girlfriend in France because she's in the peacecorps. Each of his facebook friends donated $5 and with 350 friends (some donating more than 5) he made $1950. If he had never asked, that definitely would not have happened.
